I'M BACK

After three truly wonderful months of maternity leave, I’m back in the Zapwater office again. While the people around are not nearly as cute as I’ve become accustomed to, I have to say I’ve missed this place! The Zapwater team welcomed me back with open arms, and 2,500 emails.

I can’t help but catch the buzz of excitement about new clients such as House of Marley, and new team members like Jenn Lake. It’s also great to be working on some of my old favorite clients like RA Sushi and Park Grill. So, while my days are once again filled with pitches and press releases instead of drooling and diapers, it’s great to be back!

ZAPWATER REALITY
posted by Zapwater Communications at

In recent months, television has become a crowded place for communications professionals. Public relations-based shows have popped up everywhere from BRAVO’s “Kell in Earth” to E!’s “SPINdustry.” Every publicist seems to be touting their tales of turbulent times in the industry, while every other publicist in the country clutches to their couch, praying that this won’t be another train wreck like MTV’s “PowerGirls.”

For those of you who didn’t watch, MTV’s “PowerGirls” followed New York publicist, Lizzie Grubman and team. The show positioned the lives of PR people as extravagant, from trips to the Hamptons to organizing P.Diddy’s White Party. Shopping break in the afternoon anyone? Surprisingly enough, Kelly Cutrone and her team at People’s Revolution (stars of “Kell on Earth”), have done a great job of showing what PR is really like. Tough work, long hours, and a “get it done” attitude but “do it right the first time.”

I recently picked up Kelly Cutrone’s book, If You Have to Cry, Go Outside. Inside it, you’ll find a random mix of things from her personal story (including stints with drugs and homelessness) to how to create your own religion. Some pages leave you wondering why you spent $22.99 to buy the book, but there are some key takeaways:

1. Build A Tribe: Seek out mentors and influencers that will help you along the way. Tap into these mentors for ideas, inspiration, and guidance – you never know when you’ll need it.

2. Clothes Don’t Make the Man or Woman, but They Help: Dress for the job you want, not the job you have. That doesn’t mean investing in designer clothes or spending a fortune on apparel, but it means being put together and being prepared for the unexpected.

3. If You Have to Cry, Go Outside: This is a great lesson for professionals. When you make a mistake, don’t cry about it or complain, fix the problem and find a solution. The time you spend crying could have spent mending the situation.

Zapwater Communications tagline is “We Don’t Make the Headlines, Our Clients Do” – a tagline that we are all proud to be behind. The best publicists are ghosts, behind-the-scenes and always putting client’s interests and press before their own. With that said, expect to see incredible things from our team ahead. But don’t expect to see us on BRAVO anytime soon.

While I love all of our clients, some clients/projects you just can't help but get extra excited about. One of our newest clients falls into that category.

Emily Hoffman is working on the "A Blending of Bittersweet Memories" project, a cookbook in the works dedicated to those that have lost a loved one.  The compilation of endearing stories and family recipes will allow their legacy and bittersweet memories to live on forever.  The project began after Emily Hoffman lost her mother, Renée Israel, to Breast Cancer in 2006.

Emily is giving new meaning to 'Comfort Food' by compiling a cookbook celebrating the life and recipes of lost loved ones. Watch the ABC segment to see how you can submit your recipe and memory.

It has been a crazy few weeks at Zapwater, but in the midst of working the media, I have been secretly planning a foodie’s dream getaway in NYC for my main man who turns 30 on Thursday! With so many options, it has been near impossible to make decisions, but can’t wait to take the dining scene by storm and see some past Zappers (shout out to Rebecca and Emma!) in the process.

While I can’t tell you exactly where we are going, as I know my husband vigilantly reads my blog postings, I can tell you that we are super excited to possibly meet up with new Zapwater client Sari Mintz of Foryourparty.com who will be in the Big Apple for a special exhibit! Who says you can’t mix business with pleasure! And, I can’t wait to rock out my special b-day dinner frock from le Dress (recently seen in Life & Style)!

I'M A BELIEVER
posted by Zapwater Communications at

I have worked for both large and small companies, but all mostly with structured corporate cultures. At my first job (the company name shall not be revealed nor the year I worked there) I was only allowed to wear black and navy blue suits and skirts were preferred over slacks. I was once reprimanded for wearing a leopard blouse under my black suit. It was more important to be sitting at my computer acting busy than it was to be efficient and productive. Needless to say, it has taken me some time to adjust at Zapwater.

First, I had to let go of the notion that I had to physically ‘be seen’ at my desk in order to prove I was accomplishing my job and adding value. Second, I had to make the leap into the 21st century and realize that I can wear whatever I am comfortable in and it is not a reflection of my work product or intelligence. Casual dress does not equal casual work ethic. I'm a believer.

While I still prefer to get dressed up and put make-up on before I go to the office and be in my seat by 8:30am, it took me having a baby to learn it wasn’t necessary. I wanted and needed to continue working, but it wasn’t feasible for me to come into the office every day. For the past 10 weeks, I have been able to login in at 7am or 7pm and get my job done. I get constant reassurance, appreciation and support. I am grateful every day that I work at Zapwater and am looking forward to an outstanding 2010. Thanks Team Zapwater!

SAYONARA JANUARY

The good news is that January has come to an end. The bad news is that we live in Chicago so we have to endure at least 2 more months of severe winter weather. When the temperature drops people have a tendency to hibernate and while I admit I too fall into this category, I have been trying to brainstorm things to do that will motivate me to get me out of my apartment. So far I think I have a few good ideas…

· Eat up! Winter is the perfect time of year to eat hearty meals so I think I am going to check out Duchamp’s famous havarti cheeseburger with tomato remoulade – a burger that has been talked about for some time both in and outside of the culinary world. This burger creation by chef Michael Taus has received rave reviews so I will be sure to check it out!

· Indulge in some spa treatments. Sure it may not be pedicure season but get one anyways because you and your feet deserve it! Men can partake in the spa treatments too. From February 9th – 13th men can receive a massage or facial for $39 at HALO Salon and Spas for Men (Gold Coast location only).

· And the one remedy for winter blues that works time and time again – shopping! Look forward to spring by splurging on a new frock. Sometimes all a girl needs is a hot dress to pick up her spirits, so when winter has you down visit Le Dress boutique in Wicker Park to pick out a dress for a special occasion or just a great weekend out!

At Zapwater, we get the opportunity to partner with many unique businesses, whether through client events, fundraising opportunities or pro-bono work.

Last night, my officemate Holly and I attended an event by Meredith Marks, a local jewelry designer and recent partner of our client, The Brixton Group. Hosted in the fully furnished model unit at The Brixton Group’s luxury West Loop development, CA23, Meredith Marks’ jewelry trunk show brought out some of Chicago’s shopping elite to brave the snow and cold for this truly dazzling event.

Bangles encrusted with diamonds, sparkling necklaces and vintage cocktail rings were a few of the most popular pieces at the show. Check out Meredith’s website for more and keep and eye out for this Chicago designer!

Happy New Year from Zapwater! As 2010 gets underway, we’ve all probably made resolutions we’d like to try and keep. Whether it be staying away from the junk food and eating healthy, heading to the gym one more time a week, be more organized, land a new job, whatever it may be…we are challenged at every turn to stick to our paths by daily life happenings. It’s always great to hear stories of young entrepreneurs who started out with an idea, dedicated themselves to its success and are still working hard and watching it grow. Most recently, Zapwater client Jennifer Connor, known throughout the Midwest as the Mustard Girl, was on NPR telling the story of her entrepreneurial roots and how she got started in business right out of college. Be sure to check it out, because it’s stories like these that keep us plugging along the path of success.

Trend #8: I Do's

In lieu of me recently becoming the new Mrs. Block and spending the last
year planning the wedding of my dreams, I've thought a lot about weddings
and marriage in general. With a new year on the horizon and the world in a
place where basic values are on people's minds again, I think marriage is on
the rise.

Family values and core ideals have taken center stage as the days of
materialism and designer labels have gone out the window with the economy.
With that, younger generations are wanting to get married again and putting
the days of the single life behind them. This trend will continue through
2010 with the wedding industry on the rise. Just look at the amount of
wedding shows on TV these days - even Hollywood has jumped on this
bandwagon.

From Ivanka Trump to Gisele and Tom Brady celebs are saying "I Do" to the
marriage trend. I'm even predicting another Zapwater proposal in 2010. Stay
tuned to see who it is.

Trend #7: Social Media’s Impact Continues
posted by Zapwater Communications at
0 Comments

Whether you’re connecting with old high school students, sharing pictures of what happened last weekend with friends or are one of these crazy people who are addicted to something called Farmville, everyone in the world has encountered social media in 2009. The popularity and addiction will continue, but we should all expect new developments in the world of social media.

Companies will leverage social media to new levels: Here at Zapwater, we’ve always been ahead of the curve with social media. We’ve managed our clients’ involvement and help them monitor and leverage social media to their advantage. Whether it’s a Barton Healthcare electronic newsletter, RA Sushi successfully promoting new menu items/ specials /events (TWITTER or FB page) or our client who’s filming the upcoming Dear Mr. Gacy movie here in Chicago (www.dearmrgacy.com), more and more companies and institutions are realizing the value and reach of social media. It totally levels the playing field and allows small to mid-size companies to compete with the big boys in their space. As users, we should anticipate receiving more specials offers and virtual coupons from vendors and retailers. If you’re looking for a job, you better also update your Linkedin account because it holds more ground than a resume with recruiters and hiring managers these days, at any level.

Social Media policies implemented: If they haven’t already, companies will also develop social media policies for their employees, governing or even blocking when they can access their social media fixes, just like how instant messengers and YouTube were blocked years ago. Employers may also start to restrict and enforce what content can be shared, as to not disclose sensitive information or leaks to company performance or happenings. Zapwater has helped some companies develop their own customized policies, but you can Google Sun Microsystems’ and IBM’s for some good examples.

Social media becomes even more mobile: Since companies are banning more social media tools at work, employee smoke-breaks and lunchbreaks may now turn to social media breaks. Smartphone companies are loving this, as bandwidth on iphones skyrocket and droidphones start jumping off shelves this holiday season, to handle all the video sharing that’s going to increase in 2010. We’ve said bye to the bag phone, the Zack Morris brickphone, the flip, the Razr and does anyone remember the Chocolate? BlackBerry seems to be hanging on, keeping up with new products every year (droid and Storm). Heck, when I represented RIM it had an orange screen. Maybe if they listen to our intern Michael, they should bring it back.
Social Media will become global: Studies are showing Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin and MySpace (is anyone even on that anymore?) are working on breaking down the language barriers with translation capabilities. This will open up the sea of leveraging social media to market global brands to overseas consumers, so looking forward to how that plays out.

Less email, more personal?: Phone calls turned to faxes. Faxes turned to emails, and emails turned to texts. Well, texts are still around, but ‘Tweeting’ and ‘Facebooking’ seem to be becoming the communication choice of many. I’d like to leave you with one thought though….people complain that conversations and interactions, whether personal or business, over time have become less personal (phone call to a email, now “I’ll send you a text”) With social media, somehow people feel the technology brings some personalization back? What do you think?

Trend #6: 2010 is the Year of the Tiger
posted by Zapwater Communications at

Get Ready for More Attention Mr. Woods…2010 is the Year of the Tiger

In the wake of all the attention a certain celebrity golfer has been receiving lately, perhaps it shouldn’t be too surprising that 2010 marks the “Year of the Tiger” on the Chinese Zodiac calendar. According to Chinese tradition, the tiger symbolizes a number of admirable qualities, including bravery, stubbornness - and interestingly enough - loyalty.

Instead of saying “I’m sorry” with the purchase of the Kobe special – a ridiculously expensive combination of platinum and diamonds - perhaps Tiger should invest in something wife Elin could really benefit from: a luxurious second home at CA23, an exclusive, new development located in Chicago’s booming West Loop neighborhood.

Featuring more than 4,000 square feet of single floor living space, the CA23 penthouse unit takes up its own floor, so all noise, including music, laughter and even fighting remains private from the ears of nosey neighbors. In addition, the home’s private elevator entrance will help guarantee security from paparazzi, ex-mistresses and all others Elin may want to avoid. Best of all, CA23 is perfectly situated merely blocks from Oprah’s studios, making Dr. Phil therapy sessions more convenient than ever.

In deed, what better place to let all the controversy blow over than in the heart of Windy City? Coming from the Eye of the Tiger, a new home may not be a bad deal, after all.

Trend #5: Orange You Glad You Wear Orange
posted by Zapwater Communications at
1 Comments

Men of Chicago brace yourself, orange will be the hot color for us once spring comes around. Often seen as unpopular or a taboo color, orange will finally get the payoff its deserves once the temperature starts to climb. Featured in many notable collections for Spring 2010 the color added a dash of zest and excitement, whether added to a sophisticated suit or making an already fun jacket a statement piece.

Critics will be silenced when they realize that the color is much more versatile than it appears. While donning an all-orange look would be a little much for the average Divo, adding an orange tie to a suit or pairing your favorite jeans with an orange sweater will be a great way to add this trend to your daily wardrobe.

*note. If you have been by Zapwater's offices, you'll know why an "In" Orange is a big deal.

Trend #4: Ensuring Job Security Through Education

Most of us in the business community have at least a handful of friends who are currently enrolled in graduate school seeking traditional master’s degrees to increase their professional value in common fields such as communications or business administration.

It is interesting to note, though, that as many industries have evolved to adapt to the changing business climate due to the seemingly never-ending recession, so have students in their pursuit of post-college education. Zapwater client Rasmussen College offers opportunities to students beyond the Bachelor’s level through its partnerships with leading universities. Through the Rasmussen Partner Network, students can earn Master’s and Doctoral degrees completely online, at their own convenience, from leading universities around the country.

Michelle Keyser, Marketing Manager for Rasmussen College, says she is seeing students choosing degree tracks in more resilient employment areas, such as ISM, Digital Design, and Criminal Justice. In the same vein, online degrees and classes are becoming attractive options for students who are trying to balance work, family and community responsibilities in an increasingly demanding economy.

Concurrently, many laid-off workers are returning to school to earn additional degrees in hopes of increasing their marketability in time for an eventual upturn.

The following are unique programs offered through Rasmussen College Online.

Online Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice – Homeland Security Specialization
Online Bachelor’s in Game & Simulation Production
Online Master of Public Health (MPH) - Disaster Management Degree
Online MBA in Entrepreneurship and Managing Innovation

What does your future hold? Earning an online degree may make the next season brighter for you.

Trend #3 – Couture Snuggies
posted by Zapwater Communications at
0 Comments

Ah yes, the blanket with sleeves, such an interesting concept, yet so not fashionable. Until recently, I had been an anti-snuggie advocate (even the free reading light with purchase wasn’t seducing me). The colors, patterns, fabrics, all of it just doesn’t work for me, and while I not technically a newlywed anymore, something about my husband seeing me lounge on the couch in an oversized nap sack just seems wrong.

Recently, with the introduction of college team snuggies, I have started to slightly re-evaluate my position on these notorious eyesores (don’t worry, I already asked for an Ohio State one for Christmas, at least then I can blame my ownership of one as a result of being gifted with one). How does this fit into a trend for 2010 you ask?

I think it is inevitable that someone will be smart enough to create a couture snuggie in 2010. Available in beautiful colors (pastels, golds, silvers) and patterns like cashmere or pashmina (maybe even accents like jewels), a couture snuggie could revolutionize the way people perceive the blanket with sleeves. Maybe even work on the design and have an exposed zipper on the back, incorporate a variety of neckline choices (scoop, v-neck, etc.), the options are truly endless. It is really aggravating when the blanket slips of you and you can’t reach your glass (or bottle) of wine, so hopefully someone will pick up on this untapped market.

Trend #2: The Hoodie and the Tie
posted by Zapwater Communications at

My staff often questions my style choices. See an earlier Blog entry by Holly. However, I am a firm believer that today’s fashion faux pas is tomorrow’s fashion trend. While my sister-in-laws are often amused by my fashion choices, in my heart I know I am a trendsetter.

Last year at a Shean family soiree, I sported a shirt and tie ensemble with my favorite hoodie. I am a big fan of the multi-functional “dress-up” hoodie. After much snickering from the old-men in the Muppets’ balcony (also known as my brother-in-laws), I predicted that they were looking at a future trend.

Let me preface my next statement by saying I know that I am no David Beckham. With that said, we do apparently have similar likes because the global soccer star has been sporting the hoodie and tie look quite a bit lately.

So along with fashion Blog Stylezilla, my trend prediction for 2010 is the very stylish hoodie and tie.

Trend #1: Bringing Luxury to the Masses
posted by Zapwater Communications at
0 Comments

Some say we are on our way out of the recession – and while I am no financial expert, I can say that I have noticed a slight shift in spending patterns by consumers in general. People want to begin spending money again and start buying nice things (after all we deserve them after this past economic year!) And while many of us still can’t necessarily afford to shop at luxury stores such as Gucci or Yves Saint Laurent, the good news is that we will all have the opportunity to buy designer pieces for affordable prices.

High-end designers have begun to design their own lines for mainstream stores such as Target, H&M and Payless. While this concept emerged within the past couple of years, I foresee this trend further taking off in 2010 due to the fact that people are ready to spend money on themselves again, but without splurging. Target alone has already announced new partnerships with designers including Zac Posen, whose line is set to hit stores April 25, 2010. His collection will range from $15-$150 which is a bargain compared to his celebrity-adorned collection that ranges from $900-$12,000.

Many designers have partnered with these stores such as Karl Lagerfeld, who designs for Chanel, and Jimmy Choo for H&M along with Anna Sui and Rodarte whose line with Target hits shelves this December. These lines usually only last for a few weeks at a time and sell out quickly, allowing these designers to remain their heir of exclusivity while appealing to the masses.

I’ve seen economic experts on the news discuss how this recession has engrained in our heads to not be frivolous and that we as consumers will remain ‘smart shoppers’ which goes hand-in-hand with this trend. And while some may argue that it isn’t ‘luxury’ if everyone can afford it, that point may be valid, but designers are still broadening their appeal while allowing shoppers like me to own a little piece of ‘luxury’ for an affordable price.

Yes, believe it or not it’s that time of year again; when the temperature drops, blinking lights begin to adorn trees and streets throughout the city, and children dream about their Christmas lists for Santa. In deed, it is the most wonderful time of the year.

Better still, the economy is finally showing signs of improvement. However, there are still people – especially children – who are struggling this season. Here at Zapwater, we have definitely noticed the spirit of giving with our clients.

Chicago real estate development firm, The Brixton Group, is teaming up with The Boys and Girls Club of Chicago for the second year in the row to collect toys and gifts for the charities annual gift drive. The donations will benefit local children 6-18 and can be dropped off in the lobby of Brixton’s newest West Loop space, CA23 (23 N. Aberdeen St) on Saturdays and Sundays, between 12-3 p.m., now through December 6.

The Brixton Group isn’t the only Zapwater client in the gift giving spirit this holiday. HALO [FOR MEN], Nicholas Joseph Custom Tailors and Le Dress are all participating in Toys for Tots gift drive now through December 15. Magnificent mile staple and Zapwater client, Park Grill, will also be holding a holiday toy drive benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

It’s nice to know that the holiday spirit is spreading already and that it’s among are friends here at Zapwater. Please join or stop by and support our clients as they gift back this year. Happy Holidays!

MONTH ONE AT ZAPWATER

Well, it’s official I have been with Zapwater for a month now and I have seen, done and heard some things I never thought I would. For starters a sushi-eating contest: Just picture people stuffing rolls and rolls of sushi in their mouths...in pretty much less than two minutes. Ra Sushi held their annual sushi-eating contest last month, complete with three rounds at their restaurant locations throughout Chicagoland, and one championship round at their downtown Chicago store. As an intern I helped at the Lombard and downtown locations, taking names, pictures and….dropping my jaw in amazement. Seeing someone who is actually training to eat for a living might as well be a celebrity as far as I am concerned.

Another first happened last week when I was asked to pick up some ingredients for a cooking segment at ABC 7 News for one of our clients. I ran to Treasure Island -indulging in a few delicious samples along the way - and hopped into a cab to the ABC studios. My typical errand then turned into getting access to watch the live segment in the studio…very exciting and another first.

This week was a busy one: post event follow ups, delivering, preparing and contacting. So needless to say, my Wednesday was a typical workday until I got asked to do yet another first. Holly came up to me and talked about our clients, Le Dress, which would be filming a segment on WGN next week about Homecoming dresses and trends for students. She mentioned that they needed younger girls to model the dresses for the segment. When she was first started talking, I expected the next question to be, “Do you know anyone who models?” Much to my disbelief she asked if I wanted to be one of the models. What? Extremely flattered and surprised, I of course said yes, what girl doesn’t like to dress up!

Yep, just the whirlwind of my first month at Zapwater…..never a dull moment.

Just a few days after the MTV awards and Kanye’s scene-stealing moment with Taylor Swift, I had the pleasure of attending the 6th annual Rising Star Awards at the James hotel on Sept. 16. Presented by Fashion Group International, the event recognized and awarded outstanding Chicagoans in the beauty, accessories, interior design, apparel and public relations…shout out to HALO FOR MEN for snagging the award in the beauty category!

Like many Chicago events, the evening started with a nice cocktail hour. With assistant publicist Emma in tow (I may or may not have forced her to attend) we hit the scene to meet up with clients Bob Patrizi and Nick Hansen and found ourselves surrounded by cameras, cocktails and the who’s who of Chicago fashion, not bad for a Wednesday night.

After all the excitement we ended the night with a round of mini-burgers and martinis, cheers to all the Rising Star winners!

THE RA 'SUSHI SHOWDOWN' FINALS
posted by Zapwater Communications at

Tonight, September 23 at 7 PM at RA Sushi on State Street

Over the last few weeks, the Zapwater team has staged the RA Sushi
Showdown, a sushi-eating competition for all residents close to the three RA
locations
in Chicago, Lombard and Glenview. Being a longtime sushi fan
myself, I figured this would be a fun, entertaining event to check out. Of
course, I'm pretty sure all of us enjoy sushi at a leisurely pace, with
conversations, cocktails and catching up with friends. Speaking for myself,
I'm pretty full after some sashimi or even a few rolls. Well, just the
first round of the sushi showdown had me beat and in shock. In RA Chicago's
first round, the final three contestants had consumed more than 9 full,
un-cut rolls in four rounds and just over one hour, without any beverages
other than water or any soy condiments whatsoever. Some of these guys would
destroy one full roll in less than 2 minutes and 3 in less than 5. I did
not have the privilege of checking out the competition in Glenview or
Lombard, but from what I hear, tonight's final round is going to be intense.
Remind me never to grab dinner and pick up the tab for these guys....and we
all should be glad tonight's winner gets sushi for a year. What's next?
Maybe they can take on Joey Chesnut with hot dogs.

Come check out the finals tonight, September 23, at 7 PM at RA Sushi on 1139
N. State St. in Gold Coast. A portion of the drink and food proceeds and
entry fees from the entire Sushi Showdown will be donated to the Medical
Research Junior Board Foundation, supporting Children's Memorial Hospital

PUTTING MUSTARD ON MY DOG
posted by Zapwater Communications at

Saturday morning turned out to be quite lovely. It was a sunny day in downtown Chicago. High 70’s, low humidity. I hop out on my apartment balcony, breathe in the fresh air—I couldn’t be happier for a relaxing weekend. I get ready and hop on the El, on my way to the recently opened Whole Foods on North Avenue—100,000 square feet of awesomeness and just another gem in a new city where I’ve called home for less than 60 days. A welcome change from the less manageable Manhattan, where gigantic grocery stores are hard to come by.

I walk in and am immediately side tracked by the stand out front selling fresh cilantro from a nearby farm. After buying a bundle, the nice gentleman gave me a free T-shirt that I’ve managed to wear to sleep every night since. So far my trip is going great. I head inside and am immediately amazed by the fresh produce to my right lining the aisles.

But I’m on a mission to find Mustard Girl, who is doing a product demo all day near the condiment aisle, serving up her Sweet N’ Fancy Yellow, Sweet N’ Spicey Honey, Stoneground Deli and American Dijon flavors with bite-size samples of cheese and pork. As soon as I turn the corner, there she is in her dirndl dress and gold clogs—her signature Mustard Girl outfit that is also featured on the front label of each bottle.

At 10:30 in the morning, her display area is already attracting shoppers—young, old and everything in between. Curious folks tasted the mustard and were happy to hear it is made locally in Pleasant Prairie, Wis., has fewer calories than traditional mustards, and is all natural and gluten free. Sold for just $2.39 a bottle at all Whole Foods locations in Chicago, you really can’t go wrong with Mustard Girl. Just ask the folks who swept the bottles off the shelf that day, surely stocking up on America’s favorite condiment for football season, Bears and Packers fans alike. Brats anyone?

After assisting Mustard Girl with a press photo shoot, it was time to do a little shopping of my own. Indian was on the menu tonight and what better place to stock up on spices for Vindaloo sauce than Whole Foods? Being the foodie that I am, I naturally had to try every sample in the store—sourdough bread, goat’s milk ice cream, chocolate truffles, you name it. My belly was surely satisfied and I hadn’t spent a dime—until check out that is. Definitely spend a few hours at Whole Foods if you go, and you never know, Mustard Girl may be there spreading some sunshine. Be sure to ask her how she started her company from the “seed” up. Her story will inspire you.

FAREWELL BLOG

As summer winds down and autumn looms ahead, a bittersweet emotion takes hold of us all. Whether you’re a big time exec or a lowly intern, the end of summer permeates the workday, reminding everyone that all good things must come to an end. While the transition from summer to fall undoubtedly holds new opportunities, it also marks a definitive ending. For me, that big finish pertained to the end of one of the best internship programs I have ever had the honor to be a part of.

Come this September, I will be departing for Sevilla, Spain. Of course, this southern Spanish city will be a far cry from the trendy offices of Zapwater. The experience I have gleaned from this summer gig, however, will be far from lost as I apply my new skills to my even newer surroundings. Although the time is dwindling with only 21 more days in the States, I still have quite a bit to do. First on my list is making a trek to le Dress to stock up on fashionable frocks for my European adventures. Next I have to get to RA Sushi to satisfy my seafood cravings before I embark upon my sushi-less excursion throughout Spain. Finally, I have to say goodbye to all of the amazing co-workers who have spent their summer teaching me the ropes and helping me grow as an individual and as a professional.

To be quite honest, the experiences this summer seemed endless. From working with our bubbly clients like Mustard Girl, Jennifer Connor, to learning how to navigate the conduits that connect PR to the media, I feel like I’ve already taken a trip through un-chartered waters this summer. The only catch lies in the fact that I don’t have a passport stamp to prove it. As time continues to propel forward, I can only gape at how quickly the summer flew by. Of course, my time here at Zapwater is catalogued as a summer internship, but it was less of a job and more of an adventure. Like my pending international travels promise to be, my time at Zapwater has been an unbelievable learning experience. The hands-on experience that I was offered through my interaction with our phenomenal staff is truly beyond words. So, as summer comes to an end and my working days wind down, I bid a temporary adieu to the Zapwater offices with a positive outlook and an air of gratitude.

ZAPWATER BATTLEFIELD

As a summer intern at Zapwater, nothing is shielded from you. Where most businesses place their interns in quiet corners tucked away with a computer and notepad, my experience at Zapwater could not have been more different. Since my first day here, I have been in the middle of the battlefield. With desks smack in the center of the bright and quirky office, the Zap interns are in the middle of the fire. We are privy to anything that’s going on in the entire place. As the amazing staff shuffles from office to office making business plans and sharing jokes, I have found myself immersed in the work they do and incredibly grateful for the hands on experience I have gained.

Being in the battlefield has provided me with invaluable information on what the field of public relations is all about. Not only have the publicists given me interesting projects, I have been able to see what THEY do, first hand. The variety of clients that I have been able to work with, like the Brixton Group, Park Grill, RA Sushi and leDress (to name a few!) have been a blast.

As I prepare to move on to the school year and study abroad in Spain, I am incredibly thankful that I had such a great summer at such a great place. Not only did I learn a lot, I actually had a lot of fun and met a lot of great people. This was certainly a battle I was more than happy to be a part of!

In honor of Lollapalooza, Zapwater will close the office early today at 1pm. If you can't make the show, check out the after party tonight at Crimson Lounge. Superstar DJ Samantha Ronson spins. Have a great weekend.

WINDY CITY RIVALS
posted by Zapwater Communications at

I’m reluctant to admit it, but I’m not much of a baseball fan. Don’t get me wrong, nothing could make a sunny afternoon at the ballpark more perfect. But regarding the actual logistics of the game, I’m clueless! I couldn’t even tell you how many innings there are in a game. Fortunately for me, Chicago baseball chatter has more to do with the never-ending rivalry between the North side’s Cubs and the South side’s White Sox than the play-by-play of each game.

In the Windy City, team affiliation is part of one’s identity. When Ozzie Guillen famously announced, “But one thing about Wrigley Field, I puke every time I go there,” the quote made headlines and Twitter and Facebook posts for days! On game days, the city becomes a sea of black, silver and white or blue and red like clockwork. Some area businesses have taken this prime opportunity to add a little fuel to the fire.

The Hotel Sax Chicago recently introduced the “North Side/South Side” package for Cubs and Sox fans. The package is perfect for fans or rivalry-enthusiasts like myself to make an exciting weekend out of the big games. The package includes complimentary overnight valet parking, a minimum of a one-night stay in a double bedded deluxe guest room, a complimentary drink in either the Hotel Sax technology lounge, “the Studio,” or Crimson Lounge, a sports backpack, Garrett’s popcorn, two bottles of water for the game, travel size sunscreen, a disposable camera, Cubs or Sox peanuts, a Cubs or Sox pennant, either Harry Caray’s world famous Holy Cow Chips or Jay’s Potato Chips for South side fans, a custom-made walking map to either US Cellular Park or Wrigley Field and a round-trip CTA Card.

After enjoying the day at their respective parks, guests are encouraged to write their inspired North Side or South Side story on the Hotel Sax Web site (www.hotelsaxchicago.com). At the end of August, the best North Side and South Side stories will be chosen. Winners will receive an autographed baseball from a player on his/her favorite team!

So whether you’re a die-hard baseball fan or simply like to partake in the fun rivalry of baseball season, this package is perfect for an unforgettable Chicago weekend! Game on!

ZAPWATER IS SO COOL....
posted by Zapwater Communications at

If you thought that was funny, you should try spending a day at Zapwater. On numerous occasions, the other interns and I have said that this office could very well have it’s own reality TV show, or at the very least, rival “The Office.” Now granted, our boss is much more intelligent than Michael Scott (although they both share a love for a good pair of jeans) and the numerous publicists aren’t nearly as high strung as Dwight Shrute but around here at Zapwater, there is never a dull moment. Between going to some pretty cool events, such as the AKIRA/FORD MODELS fashion walk-off at Crimson Lounge, to dealing with some intensely unique clients, I would have to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of my internship here this summer.

After interning at T. Rowe Price last year, I had a good idea of what working for a large corporation’s marketing and communications department was like, however, I always wondered what it would be like at the other extreme. Here at Zapwater, we are a small boutique PR firm. With it being so intimate, I have gotten the chance to find out what its like to work on a more personal level with all of my co-workers. The fact that I get to have contact with numerous clients and media as well as attend all of the events we host is truly a great feeling; I can see what my hard work is going towards and even in the short period of time I’ve been here, can see the outcome.

After the AKIRA/FORD MODELS fashion walk-off, Kevin and I were approached by an individual who started to chat up Zapwater. He said that we are quite possibly the coolest PR firm he knew of because we get all of the “cool, chic clients,” such as Crimson Lounge. I knew that I was impressed with our clientele but to have someone on the outside approach me, just an intern, and rave about Zapwater was great! When I’m at Zapwater, I work hard, but it’s nice to know that the office doesn’t shy away from having their share of fun. I always leave the office with something new to tell my friends back home that happened that day and they’re jealous that I’m having such a great experience but also a fabulous time! Whether it’s celebrating a birthday, going to a sneak preview of “The Proposal” or just sitting around getting lunch together, Zapwater has it’s own type of feel that I can’t even describe. And although we don’t usually play pranks on each other like on The Office, (except for a curious incident with a box of matches…), we all know how to have a good time at work. I’ve always believed that if you could find something fun that you love doing, and can make money doing it, you’ve found yourself the perfect job. Zapwater Communications has surpassed my expectations for a summer internship and definitely fulfills my criteria for the ultimate career.

"OHM" MY GOD

When Zapwater recently began working with Bucktown yoga and Pilates studio, One Mind, Body & Being, our fitness-crazy staff could not wait to become immersed in the “yogi lifestyle.” On Wednesday, Holly, Annie and I ventured to ONE's relaxing loft-like fitness studio to attempt our first run at Pilates with fitness aficionado, Stacy Weinstein.

Unlike the matt-based classes we had tried in the past, our workout session at ONE included a circuit of machine-based exercises that engaged our inner core and required coordination beyond anything we were prepared for. Stacy was very patient with us, explaining the benefits of each exercise, while also ensuring we performed each move correctly – no cheating! Despite the tricky reformers, trapezes, ladder barrels and spine correctors, we all left ONE enthusiastic (and a little sore!) about the possibilities that were sure to come from our new found love of Pilates.

One Mind, Body & Being features a team of certified Pilates and yoga instructors dedicated to overall wellness and healthy living. Located at 2014 W. Wabansia, One Mind, Body & Being specializes in personalized programs for individuals and small groups to maximize results and enhance the benefits of Pilates and yoga practices one session at a time.

To visit the studio or sign up for a private or small group class of your own, visit: www.onemindbodybeing.com. Holly and I are making our second appearance with Stacy this Friday – so stop in and say “hello”!

A CRAMMED OPENING CELEBRATION
posted by Zapwater Communications at

Last week Holly, two extraordinary Zapwater interns, and I hopped a bus to Boystown for a night of fashionable fun at the grand opening of Broadway’s newest boutique, CRAM. Owner and Windy City fashionisto Marc Engel (CRAM is Marc spelled backwards, just an FYI) has created a unique shopping destination that offers men’s and women’s clothing and accessories from American and European designers.

We arrived and immediately began browsing through the racks of clothes in the rustic, apartment-like space. Champagne was poured and cupcakes were passed as guests streamed in throughout the night. I tried my best to keep my walled CRAMed far into my purse but couldn’t help but eye a pair of jeans for my boyfriend and a new dress for myself.

After mixing, mingling, and managing not to completely drain my checking account, Holly, Kristin and I boarded a southbound Broadway bus and planned a post payday trip to CRAM. Fingers crossed that my dress will still be there!

CRAM is located at 3331 N. Broadway in the heart of Lakeview and is open daily from noon until 7pm.

SUMMER STYLE AT ZAPWATER

You wouldn’t know it was summer in Chicago by the recent weather patterns, however, rainy days mean conference room working (and fashion critiquing) in the Zapwater office.

Last week, while celebrating Susie’s monumental birthday, we dived right into a fashion conversation with Dave at the helm (a reference to boating will come up again later). After pointing out the many ways we describe Dave’s wardrobe choices (shrimp boat captain/deadliest catch ensemble, Sgt. Pepper blazer, madres-gone-wrong button down, etc.), I started to think about my own summer-wear.

While the temps have barely touched 80, it is time to start busting out the summer dresses, sandals and sunglasses. Lucky for me (and all of the other city fashion-lovers) le Dress is hosting a “Pets in Paris Week” (starts this Saturday and runs through 6/27) to benefit PAWS and give four-legged friends a chance at fashion. For one week, shoppers are encouraged to bring in their couture counterparts for sweet Parisian treats and a look at some amazing doggy-dresses. Half of proceeds from the handmade frocks and 10% of purchased le Dress private label dresses will be donated to the local rescue haven. Fido-free shoppers are encouraged as well, it’s the perfect excuse to stock up on summer’s must-have staple item! 1741 W. Division, www.ledresschicago.com

ZAPWATER LIFTS SOME LADIES' SPIRITS

I often Blog about how Zapwater and its clients “Give Back.” Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is one of the pillars of both our company and the programs we put together for our clients.

Over the years, I’ve done some pretty cool stuff in public relations. But nothing compares to the event Zapwater put together last Thursday.

On Thursday, June 11, 2009, the USO of Illinois (with the help of Zapwater) honored three Gold Star Mothers and three Gold Star Spouses for a day of pampering, rest and relaxation as part of its "USO of Illinois Diva For A Day" program.

These six deserving women are wives and mothers of fallen heroes of the 33rd Infantry Brigade, Illinois National Guard; the largest military unit to deploy from Illinois since World War II. They were treated to a day that recharged the soul, as the USO stood with them to remember and honor the sacrifice of their loved ones and the sacrifices they have made as military family members on the home front. Each of the six women were invited to bring one friend along with them to take part in this day of luxury.

The “Diva for a Day” experience began with the U.S. Army's 234th Birthday Ceremony in Daley Plaza. The six courageous women were featured special guests of the USO. Following the ceremony, the USO and Zapwater treated the ladies to a day of special activities including:

Lunch at Rhapsody, a Contemporary American restaurant in Chicago’s vibrant South Loop where the “divas” were treated to an exclusive prix-fixe menu created especially for the occasion.

Spa services at the spa at dana hotel where they chose from services such as a mani/pedi and facial and/or deep tissue massage.

Champagne toast and honoree of the night status at Crimson Lounge for Maven’s Diva Series.

Watch the clip on ABC and you’ll see why I get choked up every time I see it. Job well done USO. Job well done Zapwater.

Zapwater continued its winning ways at today’s Publicity Club of Chicago Golden Trumpet Awards. Zapwater won two Silver Trumpet trophies in recognition of its outstanding work in the “Marketing” Category.

The two "Trumpets" are the fourth and fifth major awards in public relations excellence that Zapwater has snagged in the past two years.

Zapwater was awarded a Silver Trumpet for its work on behalf of the Hotel Sax Chicago. The campaign “Introducing the Hotel Sax Chicago” is the second major award for Zapwater’s efforts on behalf of the hotel, making it one of the most recognized publicity campaigns for an independent hotel property in the country.

Zapwater also won a Silver Trumpet for “Lettuce Introduce you to Hub 51,” a publicity campaign introducing Chicago to Hub 51, the restaurant opened in 2008 in River North.

If we keep this up, we're going to have to build a shelf for all of our trophies.

Everyone is feeling the affects of the recession but its still a good time
to give back a little and enjoy yourself at the same time. In the spirit of
this, I recommend everyone go to RA Sushi between May 24-30 for a little
sushi, sake & good times!

RA Sushi will host its fifth annual “Nicky’s Week” fundraiser May 24 to 30,
to benefit the internationally renowned St. Jude Children’s Research
Hospital. All three Chicagoland RA locations (Gold Coast, Glenview and
Lombard) will donate 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale of Edamame,
Tootsy Maki, Shrimp Shumai, FIJI, Red Bull, The Republic of Tea, and select
cocktails, to St. Jude.

Nicky’s Week was developed in memory of longtime St. Jude patient Nicholas"
Nicky” Mailliard
, of Scottsdale, who lost a long battle with brain cancer
in February 2005 at the young age of 13. A nephew of one of RA’s founders,
Nicky held a special place in the hearts of RA associates throughout the
organization. RA initiated the fundraiser in honor of Nicky as a way to
further promote the exceptional attention and support provided at no cost to
families of children receiving care at St. Jude.

All donations from the weeklong effort will help pay for St. Jude’s
development of treatment and cures for diseases such as brain tumors,
leukemia, sickle cell disease, and other life-threatening illnesses in
children.

PROM
posted by Zapwater Communications at

I am sure many ladies remember the quest for the perfect prom dress, shoes, purse and of course…date, like it was yesterday. I recall my senior prom dress, it was from cache and was a medley of silver sequins and sea foam green, very similar to the Donna Martin Mermaid costume on 90210. Nonetheless it was a “stressful” time, there was tanning, hair appointments, manicures and pedicures and figuring out who was going to book the limo. It all seemed so simple, beg my parents to pay for an overpriced night out and that was that. Almost ten years later (I do try to squeeze in the dress when I am home for the holidays), things are much different, especially in this economy when it comes to frivolous expenses.

So this prom season, le Dress, the city’s go-to dress destination, served as an official drop off location for The Glass Slipper Project, a 100% volunteer organization that gathers dresses, shoes, bags, make up and jewelry to help make prom a reality for those who would otherwise not be able to attend. Those who were gracious enough to donate those “Oh, I will totally wear this again” bridesmaid dresses received 20% off of a new item at the boutique. A multitude of items were just transported to Vernon Johns School today and will be added to the Glass Slipper Boutique when it opens again this Saturday in the school’s auditorium.

Don’t worry, no need to wait until next year to donate, the project takes donations all year long, check out The Glass Slipper Project to see how you can help!
