TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH FOR OUR CLIENTS. LITERALLY.

Many of Zapwater’s first clients were in the digital photography industry. Charter clients included Moab Paper and RIP manufacturer ErgoSoft. As Zapwater continued to grow and work in other industries, the photo industry remained a special place in my heart. Every year, I looked forward to my trips to industry shows such as CES, PhotoPlus and PMA.

So when I was given the opportunity to be a real photographer, I jumped at the chance.

Recently, one of my clients, renowned wildlife photographer Andy Biggs asked me to tag along with him on a Photographic Polar Bear Expedition. Of course, I said yes.

On Tuesday, November 11, I be joining Biggs, a BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Finalist, and a dozen other photographers on a trip to the Churchill, Canada and the arctic tundra. Yes, that is pretty much the North Pole. Just for reference, Churchill is Canada's only port to the Arctic Ocean.

Today, I will be packing in all of my new gear from SONY into my gura gear bag and preparing for a once in a lifetime trip. A huge thanks to SONY for lending the group some of their new products to test out on the polar bears. Some of the gear SONY sent us includes a DSLR-A900 and SAL-300F28G Lense, as well as some of its other new products. I’ll be sure to get some great shots!

I’ll be be posting about the trip daily on Zapwater’s blog. So definitely make sure you check back for updates.

PRESIDENT-ELECT

On Tuesday, the world watched as America elected a new President. This was the first time in my life that I can remember such energy and anticipation during an election and I truly believe there were two factors for Obama's win. Time for change in our country and the youth vote. Rock the Vote, an organization driven to engage and build the political power of young people, reporter that more votes had been cast by 5 p.m. EST in the youth-dense precincts in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Florida and Nevada, then total in the 2004 election. My friend Ari wrote me an email yesterday from Africa (where he lives) and said that a woman grabbed him on the street after hearing his American accent and said "You are American, I am so proud of you! Well done." Numbers in this election should make us proud and regardless of party affiliations, all voters can celebrate a victory in making their voices heard. This is an example of true democracy.

BOOGIE MAN

My wife and I don’t always agree politically, but I don’t think anyone could disagree that this has been such an amazing week for our country. I was lucky enough to have been in Grant Park with my wife on Tuesday night to witness history and Barack Obama’s first speech as President-elect.

As a veteran of too many political campaigns and in anticipation of Election Day, I dragged my wife to see the political documentary Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story. Needless to say, Katie and I had very different reactions to the amazing documentary. As a disclaimer, Katie did think the documentary was well done.

Boogie Man is a must watch for anyone involved in public relations or marketing. The man behind the Willie Horton ads of 1988 is remembered by some as brilliant and effective, by others as shameful and destructive.

Politics aside, Atwater’s lasting effect is found in American politics. After watching Boogie Man, you’ll quickly release, Atwater’s legacy is visible everywhere. In many ways, he is the father of the modern political campaign. But don't take my word for it, go see Boogie Man.

Each year, thousands of photographers travel to New York City for PhotoPlus Expo, the industry’s cutting-edge tradeshow for all things photography-related. Ranked one of the top shows by Crain’s and Exhibitor Magazine, PhotoPlus draws attention from thousands of professionals, novices and students, alike. Zapwater was on hand at the show - which took place Oct. 23-25 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center on the city’s West side - representing clients Moab by Legion Paper and photographer Andy Biggs.

Featured at Moab’s booth this year were prints from photographers Bill Fortney and Mark Kettenhofen’s upcoming book, America from 500 Feet II. Printed on Moab’s award-winning Entrada Rag fine art paper, the photos received a lot of attention from attendees at the show.

America from 500 Feet II is a unique book of aerial photographs that capture breathtaking American landscapes from a motorized parachute 500ft in the air. As a proud sponsor of the book, Moab capped-off its experience at PhotoPlus by hosting a private meet-and-greet with the book’s photographers at its booth.

BEST AND BRIGHTEST

At Zapwater Communications, we’re proud to work with the best and brightest. For the fourth time, a Zapwater Communications' client has been named to a 40 Under 40 List. Congratulations to Kim Kleeman, President of Shakespeare Squared, for being named to this years Crain’s Chicago Business 40 Under 40 List.

This is the second year in a row that a Zapwater client is on Crain’s prestigious list. Last year, USO President Lisa Moeller made the list.

I’ve always believed that one of Zapwater’s sweet spots as a business is working with young, emerging entrepreneurs. Our clients are superstars and we love telling the world about them.

Should it be surprising that another Zapwater client has made the list? Absolutely not because we live by the mantra “We don’t make headlines, our clients do.” I’m looking forward to see who makes next year’s list. Congrats Kim!
